Deceivers
Any type of finger mullet or small baitfish patterns work very well.
Wade the flats and keep an eye on the shore line or depths of 2-5 feet of water. When Jacks are present bait fish will typically get very nervous so you will see the surface of the water break and ripple. When the Jack Crevalle go into feeding mode the bait will explode out of the water. As soon as you spot this action get your fly as close to the action as possible and as quickly as possible.
Most fly fisherman will tell you to always cast to the outside edge. Personally i don’t think Jacks are that spooky. I have thrown top water lires practically on thier head and they attack without issue.
The point is if the water is busting with bait fish get your fly there fast. Make as much comotion as you can with your fly as well while stripping it back in. Your fly must appear to be trying to escape and running for it’s life. This action should convince a hungry jack to strike.
once hooked up you will have a great fight on your hands. Jacks have a very tough lip so be sure to set the hook well and then hang on. Let them run or they will break you off.
In the dog days of summer on the flats there is not much more fun than Jack Crevalle Fly fishing. They seem to feed through out the day rather than heading for deeper cooler water as a lot of the other gamefish will do.
Another species you may encounter as well are lady fish. They jump like tarpon and a lot of fun to catch as wel.
