Green Drake Comments:
Nymph
If trout are bulging or flashing below the surface during a guttulata hatch, nymphs may be the key. Fish them with animation to imitate the naturals swimming to the surface. This activity seldom occurs, however, as the trout generally prefer the dun.
Dun
While trout feed heavily on guttulata duns, they are very selective. Combine this with the fact that this species differs slightly in size and color from stream to stream. To further complicate the matter, trout may be taking duns (*1) flopping on the surface or(*2) riding motionless on the current. With these considerations, choose the correct imitation and present in the manner of the naturals.
(*1) Well hackled imitation twitched on the surface
(*2) Dun silhouette style
Spinner
Mating activity begins mostly just before dark preceded by a cloud of males decending to the water. Duns are most often hatching simultaneously and trout will feed on both. Accurate imitations of duns, oviposting females and fully spent spinners should cover this activity well after dark.
