- Grannom Comments:
- The Brachycentrus numerosus is one of the more important early season hatches. Their habit of hatching in the afternoon is very convenient for fly fishers. Look for them in the moving water of quality trout streams. They don’t do well in still water sections. Trout feed heavily on all life stages of the grannom; larva, pupa and oviposting adults. Imitate them with flies having Brown wings and Green bodies.
Before the hatch, use a rectangular shaped dark cased caddis nymph with a white colored tippet to imitate their silk anchor line.
As the the hatching begins the deep and emergent sparkle pupa are the flies of choice. The emerging pupae take quite some time to escape the shuck and drift a good distance providing good action.
Oviposting occurs in early evening. Oviposting females die off in huge numbers and litter the stream surface. They sprawl flush in the surface film. This sprawled posture is best imitated by a Delta Wing Caddis pattern.
